MPARC 30th Anniversary Celebration

The Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club was founded on February 22, 1988, and 2018 is the club’s 30th anniversary! Joy W2JMS has been working diligently to organize a very special celebration for the 30th anniversary, and the details follow below.

What:  30th  Anniversary of MPARC

Where:  Whitcomb Lodge (Beaverdam Park South Side) Address and directions will be below.

Date:  February 18th, 2018

Time:  Starting at 9:00am and Ending by 5:30pm.  Come anytime during the day that you can.  The set up crew (anyone who wants to help) will start around 8:00am.

Special Event Operating Station:  We hope to be on the air around 9:00 and talk the rest of the day as long as someone wants to operate

Lunch:  We will start to eat between 1:00 and 1:30.  Lunch will be pulled pork and pulled chicken BBQ from Scoots BBQ at Gloucester Point with buns for making sandwiches.  Side dishes will vary as they are being provided via pot luck by the members.  We will have coffee, soft drinks, and water.

Program:  This will be a fun time for all after lunch.  We have a few awards (serious and fun) to hand out.  I have just been informed that we will have a guest speaker.  Our very own MPARC Surgeon General (motivational speaker and story teller) Dr. John Myles has agreed to give us a run down on all the members he can remember.  This could be very long or very short depending on how well his memory is doing!  Actually he has promised to keep it short.

Raffle/Door Prize Drawing:  If your party planner gets busy, there may be a few door prizes.

Grand Raffle Drawing:  Thanks to all your ticket purchases, the winner will walk away with $450.00 to use to enhance their Amateur Radio Shack.

I think that about sums it up.  If you have any specific questions, please  send an e-mail and I will try to answer them.

Here are the address and directions for the lodge.  Again, contact me if you need more info.

For GPS users:  There is not a physical address for the lodge.  The address for Beaverdam is 8687 Roaring Springs Rd, Gloucester VA.  If you put this in your GPS, it will take you to the entrance of the park.  However, just before you get there (about the time the GPS says “You have arrived at your destination”, you will see a fairly large sign on the left hand side of the road pointing to “Whitcomb Lodge” (I plan to put a sign under it that says “Happy 30th”.  If you have never been there, it looks like it is a driveway to nowhere, but the lodge parking lot is at the end of that road.  It is a pretty good size parking lot, but if we should run out of room, rather than parking on the side of the road leading in, there is space at the beginning of the driveway that is overflow parking for the actual park.

Basic directions for those without GPS:

If you are coming North on Rt 17, you will go past the shopping area where Walmart and Home Depot are located to the next traffic light (Belroi Rd).  Turn right onto Belroi.  Go to the stop sign and turn right again.  You will see a log cabin on the left.  Turn left on to Roaring Springs Rd just before the cabin.  Follow it until you see the sign for the lodge.

If you are coming South on Rt 17, you will turn left at the traffic light for Main Street (at Newington Baptist Church) and go straight until you see the log cabin on the left.  Turn left on to Roaring Springs Rd just before the cabin.  Follow it until you see the sign for the lodge.

I look forward to a great day of fun and friendship and hope you do too.

Joy, W2JMS
